#WeekendCoffeeShare (November 1, 2025)

Hi everyone on this first day of November. I’m not struggling as badly with memories of my admission to the psych ward (November 2, 2007) as I was in previous years. However, I’m struggling nonetheless.

Today, I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare. It’s been a while. I just had my last cup of coffee for the day and will probably take a break from writing this post for my 8PM soft drink and meds. Let’s have a drink and let’s catch up.

If we were having coffee, first I’d talk about the weather. It’s been a mixed bag but mostly rainy with daytime highs around 13°C. I didn’t do a lot of walking, but still managed to meet my movement goal each day this week. Unfortunately, it seems that my Apple Watch doesn’t care that I paused my activity rings while sick with probable COVID during the second half of September, as my streak is now down to 33 days.

If we were having coffee, then I’d moan about the fact that the care home is chronically short-staffed. There is, fortunately, a new staff here who started orienting a few weeks ago. She started her orientation on my side of the home on Tuesday. That day, I tried to make smalltalk with her, knowing that she’d be oriented to my activity the next day, but she hardly said a word. The next day, indeed, she was oriented to my activity. This went okay’ish, in the sense that I accepted her for the whole two-hour time slot and together with the staff doing the orienting, explained several activities. However, once again my attempt at getting acquainted with her didn’t get a response. The staff complimented me on how well I’d done. I told her she’d probably use that against me. I was right.

In the evening, the staff said she’d be orienting the new one to my morning routine the next day. Having hardly spoken with the new staff, I wasn’t comfortable with being naked around her yet, but the staff didn’t accept this. She claimed I hadn’t accepted the new staff in the afternoon either and just don’t want to meet new people and screamed that soon there’d be no-one left. I tried to explain my point of view, with the help of another staff, but to no avail.

On Thursday indeed the staff tried to force me to accept the new one for her orientation. She yelled that I had one chance and if I refused the new one now, she’d be considered as having had her orientation to me. This, I consider horribly unfair, as with the other clients, new staff get multiple orientations. But it’s in my rules, the same rules about no completely unfamiliar staff. I was originally told that the reason for the rules is simply money, ie. the fact that regular temp workers are not given an orientation period so I’m lucky to get one chance with them. I understand this, but I don’t think it should apply to staff who do get an orientation period. And for what it’s worth, I never said I needed temp workers to be oriented to me, but staff need to know these workers are still strangers to me and aren’t as familiar as the staff who’ve been working here for years. No rules can explain this, it’s about empathy. And I’m pretty sure the staff telling me off about refusing the new one, doesn’t have much of that for us clients.

If we were having coffee, I’d also moan about the fact that I now have no assigned staff at all. Like I said a while ago, the student one left for the intensive support home a month ago. The next one doesn’t want to work with me for now due to me having hurt her feelings. And yesterday I found out that the third one is off sick. I E-mailed the support coordinator asking her that, if I need to have another assigned staff, it won’t be the staff who I mentioned above. Don’t get me wrong, she’s fun-loving and great with activities, but she doesn’t know me behind the rules.

If we were having coffee, I’d try to end on a positive note. Yesterday, like six weeks ago, I joined the dance party at the institution townhouse. This time, I decided that I could deal with there not being a staff member for me and to just ask a volunteer if I needed help. One of the reasons was the fact that there were only two staff who are authorized to give meds at the home during the dance and I didn’t feel like I could ask one of them to accompany me, yet the other staff haven’t been oriented to me yet. I considered asking that one of the temp workers accompany me, but, for reasons that you’ll understand if you’ve read this far, felt this would be used against me. The dance was fun.

Finally, one more slightly positive note: we had general elections here in the Netherlands on Wednesday and, thankfully, Democrats 66 (D66) won. This isn’t the party I voted for, but it’s much better than the far-right Party for Freedom, which came out second. D66 is the most progressive, queer-supportive party out there. The reason I didn’t vote for them is the fact that healthcare and social security matter even more to me and the fact that D66 would likely need an economically right-wing party on the government too. However, unless Rob Jetten (D66’s leader) is a total hypocrite and cooperating with the far-right JA21 in favor of the left-wing GroenLinks-PvdA, things will be okay’ish in this respect. In any case, I’m looking forward to the first openly gay prime minister.

The Could-Be COVID Chronicles, September 2025 Edition

Hi everyone. It’s been over a week since I last wrote a post for my blog. I’ve had some ideas on my mind, but I’ve been battling what I believe could be COVID since Wednesday. Here in the Netherlands, all official precautions and regulations were ended in early 2023 and replaced with a recommendation to “use common sense”. Now my institution has always been rather careless when it comes to quarantining people suspected of having COVID and I myself am not the most sensible either when there are no rules.

On Wednesday, in fact, I was cooking burgers for the entire home when this whole thing started. I blame myself for several other clients and half the staff being sick now, but the staff say they would probably have caught it somewhere anyway, just like I probably caught it from a staff coming to work sick on Monday last week.

On Thursday, I was in bed all day, but I felt better on Friday, so I decided to go for several walks and a dance. Not a good idea if I indeed do have COVID, as not resting well enough can contribute to having long-term symptoms.

Saturday, I was in bed again for most of the day but dancing at 11PM in my room again in order to meet my movement goal on my Apple Watch. I then decided I really had to rest, so lowered my movement goal for that day and paused my rings altogether on Sunday until tomorrow.

I’m now feeling okay, but not nearly back to normal. Tomorrow, the Center for Consultation and Expertise consultant is coming. There are no longer any rules prohibiting them to visit me and several other staff are working while having symptoms now too. Besides, I didn’t have a say in inviting them, so I don’t feel in a position to cancel.

I do feel guilty for basically doing what everyone else is here, ie. living my life as if COVID is no longer a threat. I know, I don’t know whether I actually have COVID since testing is no longer a thing here either, but I definitely feel this is more than just a very nasty cold.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (July 5, 2025)

Hi everyone. I’m once again joining #WeekendCoffeeShare. I just had my last cup of coffee for the day and probably won’t finish this post before I have my evening soft drink, but I might be able to get my staff to prepare me a cup of green tea at around 9PM. Let’s have a drink and let’s catch up.

If we were having coffee, first I’d talk about the weather. Oh my, has it been hot! On Tuesday and Wednesday, we had daytime temps of 36°C. The weather has been more bearable later in the week and tomorrow, we’re finally supposed to get rain. We were supposed to get a few thunderstorms on Thursday too, but thankfully not.

If we were having coffee, then I’d tell you that I did manage to meet my movement goal on my Apple Watch each day this week. Not by walking on those hot days, of course. That is, on Wednesday evening I did go for a short walk. On Tuesday, I stayed indoors all day and got my exercise by dancing. I did walk on every other day.

If we were having coffee, I’d share that I talked about exercise with the movement therapist on Wednesday. Next week, she’s going to come up with some exercises that I can do on my fitness mat.

If we were having coffee, then I’d tell you that my best friend and I went out for dinner yesterday at the Thai restaurant we took my parents to for my birthday two years ago. I had chicken with black pepper, garlic and vegetables and of course rice that was enough to feed a family of four. I loved the food, but I did feel pretty overloaded afterwards.

If we were having coffee, next I’d moan about my day schedule. It’s still frustratingly unclear. This got me to have an outburst on Wednesday, because of course it was too hot to go for a walk and the staff assigned to me couldn’t do dice games. It all boils down to the fact that I feel overwhelmed by all the activity options and then I end up doing nothing. I’m really unsure as to how to solve this issue and sometimes I feel like a nagger.

If we were having coffee, finally I’d tell you that, thankfully, I’m still able to appreciate the little things in life. Like the green tea I mentioned above. On Wednesday, I was talking to my best friend, who was having a cup of tea at the time, and this got me thinking that even though it was 9PM, no-one said I couldn’t at least ask for a cup of tea myself. I prefer plain green tea, so I went to the living room and asked the staff for a cup of green tea. She was okay with this, so the next day, when she worked again, I decided to ask her for green tea at 9PM again. I’m seeing this as a treat. Same with my extra cup of coffee this morning when I woke up. Of course, people living independently might take their tea or coffee at the time they wish for it for granted, but I don’t.

Gratitude List (December 29, 2024) #TToT

Hi everyone. I’m doing a gratitude list again. As usual, I’m linking it up with Ten Things of Thankful. Here goes.

1. A nice Christmas-themed walk around institution grounds on Tuesday. We were able to see lights, listen to a barrel organ playing festive jingles and at the end of the walk, we could do some crafty things like decorate a clementine with cloves and create a paper rose.

2. The fact that the labeling tape I ordered online early in the week, actually arrived on time for my visit to my in-laws on Christmas (where I’d had it delivered) and the tape also fit into my home’s label printer. I as a result was finally able to label my new clay.

3. Fries. I always have to include several food-theemd thankfuls, don’t I? On Tuesday, we had French fries.

4. Seeing my spouse and in-laws on Christmas.

5. Making salad on Boxing Day. A student staff’s mother had made homemade Turkish-style meatballs called köfte.

6. Being able to play DJ at the home’s dance party on Friday. Another student staff had brought his large Bluetooth-enabled speaker and I asked him if I’d be allowed to connect it to my iPhone and be the DJ. That was so cool! At first, I played ABBA like I’d requested the staff do the previous time we had a party. Then I put on a random EDM playlist, but that wasn’t well-received, so I switched to my own personal playlist of Dutch and dialect songs.

7. Getting in lots of exercise minutes today. I took three longer walks.

8. The fact that my support coordinator reassured me that, pending my one-on-one renewal request, things will stay the same for now and no hours will be cut. Officially, my one-on-one needs renewing by January 1 and we haven’t heard anything yet. I’m still struggling with my current hours particularly in the evenings, so I really hope that things won’t get worse. We’ll see.

9. Meeting up with my spouse again yesterday. And looking forward to going to our house over New Year’s.

10. The fact that the festive season is almost over. I can’t stand all the chaos.

Music Moves Me (December 9, 2024): Dancing Queen!

Hi everyone. I joined in with Music Moves Me many years ago and rediscovered it a few weeks back.

Guess what? On Saturday, one of the student staff had brought a Bluetooth speaker and he was blasting music in the other side of the home’s living room. One of the clients there knew the lyrics to every song. They were Dutch-language songs, none of which I knew, because that’s not my taste in music.

However, I at one point decided to move over there and request the staff put on a song I knew. The first band that came to mind was ABBA.

I and a few other clients were singing and dancing along and it was so much fun! The client who knew all the lyrics to the Dutch songs, sang along too.

We danced to a few more ABBA songs and then the staff asked us to name another artist or band. I came up with P!nk and mentioned her song Cover Me in Sunshine.

I honestly had no idea this song was a duet between P!nk and her daughter until I saw the music video list Willow Sage Hart and looked it up. I guess this makes me the most musically stupid person in the linky, but oh well. I just wanted to share that dancing made my evening. For this reason, I’m also joining in with Trent’s #WeeklySmile.

Several staff noticed how much fun we were having and they’re trying to get a Bluetooth speaker for the home. There’s a monthly dance event at the institution townhouse too, but that isn’t nearly as much fun.

#WeekendCoffeeShare (September 28, 2024)

Hi everyone. I’m joining #WeekendCoffeeShare again today. It’s nearly 10PM here, so no coffee for me. If you’d like some though, pour yourself a cup and let’s chat.

If we were having coffee, first I’d moan about the weather. I had to check back to last week’s coffee share to see if memory was serving me well, as I almost couldn’t believe the daytime high was above 20°C then. Today, the daytime high was only 14°C. It was raining all day yesterday and most of the day today too.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that, as a result of the rainy weather, I almost didn’t meet my movement goal on my Apple Watch yesterday. I was tempted to lower my goal for that day specifically, but my spouse convinced me that would be cheating. I then danced around my room for about 25 minutes so that at least I’d meet my goal. I didn’t meet my exercise goal, but that doesn’t count towards the perfect month award.

During most of the rest of the week, I didn’t walk much at
all either. On Thursday, however, I went swimming. This was great!

If we were having coffee, I’d share that I’ve also been quite fatigued lately. I’m probably starting to experience a touch of the seasonal blues.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I had bloodwork on Monday. I had no idea why and in fact was convinced they got me mixed up with another client. Apparently not. However, I had already had breakfast and one of the things needing to be checked was glucose. I thought this would be problematic, but the nurse said it wasn’t. I finally found out the reason for the bloodwork yesterday: it was the fact that I’d been experiencing night sweats. I had long attributed those to the warmer weather, but then again they aren’t gone now (though they’ve lessened). Fingers crossed for all normal results.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I had a meeting with my support coordinator, behavior specialist and mother-in-law on Monday. It was a bit difficult. Though I could see my support coordinator doing her best to help me, it was still quite hard to feel the limits of what she can do for me.

For example, I had been struggling with play therapy because a staff I don’t realy trust had been attending it with me. My support coordinator tried her best to find a somewhat trusted staff for me in the coming weeks but couldn’t, so I felt like giving in and accepting a staff I at least don’t feel bad about.

The next day, I had a candid conversation with my support coordinator. That was somewhat reassuring. Play therapy on Wednesday was still more or less useless.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that next week, I’ll be video-recorded in my interactions with a staff. The goal is for staff to look at the tiny signs that might lead to distress and things they can do or not do to help me.

If we were having coffee, I’d end on an upbeat note by saying I’ve been making a lot of smoothies lately. I don’t really have the energy for polymer clay or the like, but preparing a smoothie takes only five to ten minutes. I always create enough to share with at least some of my fellow clients and they truly appreciate it. My best one was a smoothie with pineapple, banana, coconut water and a pinch of cinnamon.

I also finally managed to make a delicious mug cake. I mean, the ones I made before were okay, but there was always something slightly off about them. The only thing about this one was the fact that I couldn’t wait for it too completely cool before consuming it. Otherwise, it was great!

Daily Habits For a More Meaningful Life

Hi everyone. Today was a good day for once. I went swimming for the first time in a long while. No, that’s a lie, since I went swimming with my fellow residents yesterday too. What I meant is that I was originally allocated this spot on Thursdays for swimming but haven’t been able to go yet for staffing-related reasons. Yay for an opportunity to go today!

This isn’t something I can do everyday or even each week, but there are lots of activities I could incorporate into my daily routine that will give me a more meaningful life. Today I’m joining Thursday Thirteen with a list of those.

1. Shower or wash myself. Personal hygiene often goes out the window when I’m depressed. Though I don’t really see its point in boosting my mood, in that for me the feeling of being clean doesn’t do that, I can at least say I accomplished something that day.

2. Brush my teeth. Same as above really.

3. Meditate. I’m not the kind of woman who is good at long body scans or the like, but I do love shorter, affirmation-based meditations.

4. Journal. This is something I don’t do nearly often enough. I really should be incorporating daily time to journal into my calendar. I love writing stream-of-consciousness style, but this isn’t usually suited for this blog.

5. Read. I don’t mean I should be reading a novel a day or something. Even a chapter in a children’s book could count. Like, today I read a few chapters in the second book in the Unicorn Academy series.

6. Diffuse some essential oils (or fragrance oils) in my diffuser. I’m not a strong believer in aromatherapy. I mean, I’ve literally slept like a log smelling a combo of all citrus oils over the past few nights. I do believe smelling good scents can help my mood though.

7. Listen to music. I really feel that music, any kind of music, can be good for my mental health. Whether it’s soothing instrumental music to sleep to or loud EDM when I need a confidence boost.

8. Walk. I do this almost each day already, but I’m adding it to this list anyway in case there’s a time when I forget about its importance in boosting my mood.

9. Move in general. I was going to list dancing as a separate item on this list, but then, though it would be easier to get to thirteen, it would be harder to incorporate everything into each day. I honestly feel that movement in general, whether it is dancing, yoga, cycling, swimming or whatever, helps my mood.

10. Drink a cup of green tea. I definitely feel that a daily cup of green tea could add to my mental wellbeing. Maybe it’s the fact that I usually have those with the staff members I trust a little when talking though.

11. Talk to other people, reach out for support. When there’s a day I cannot talk to any staff because there are all staff I don’t trust, I can always talk to my spouse or mother-in-law.

12. Write down my positives and negatives for the day. This usually helps me remember that, even on the hardest days, there are some moments I’ve felt okay.

13. Remember: pain is temporary, giving up is forever.

TGIF: Twenty-Two Degrees!

#TGIF, an opportunity to ramble.

Today, let me share about the weather. It’s been okay most of the week with some rain, some clouds and occasionally a bit of sunshine and temperatures rising to about 16°C. That’s cold for May if you ask me. Now I’m no weather expert, so I have no idea what constitutes normal weather for May, but it feels like it should be almost summer-like.

Which, today, it is. The daytime temperature reached 22°C. Well-known Dutch meteorologist Erwin Kroll, who would do the weather forecast on public television in the late 1980s and 1990s and is therefore my face of the weather, once told an interviewer on the audio magazine for blind children that this was his favorite temperature. After all, at 22°C, you can both sit still and move around without getting cold or hot respectively. I love this temperature too, though my ideal temperature is slightly warmer.

I once again wore my blue, flowery skirt that I also wore last week, along with the same blue shirt. In the evening, I changed into shorts, because I was going on the stationary bike. I had also gone for three walks today, so up till this point have nearly two hours of active minutes on my Apple Watch. I intend to still dance some, because I feel compelled to double my movement goal once again.

In other health news, I stepped onto the scale on Wednesday and I finally reached a truly healthy BMI. Yes, you heard me correct, this time it’s not nearly, but actually. Even though my dietitian tells me I no longer need to lose weight and has been telling me so for a while, I’d love to still lose a few pounds. That being said, I understand the dietitian’s logic: with my history of bulimic tendencies, it’s easy to fall into that trap again and a healthy lifestyle is more important than an ideal weight. The last time I was at a healthy BMI, was back when I got married in 2011, but then again back then I engaged in purging behaviors quite a lot too. I never, ever want to go back there.

I do need to make sure exercising doesn’t become compulsive either. That being said, that’s not as likely to happen as my body just can’t go on forever. Then again, actually listening to my body – challenging it when it needs to be challenged beyond its comfort zone and giving it a rest when it needs to rest -, is quite hard. I am working on this though.

Hello Monday (May 8, 2023)

Hi everyone. My weekend was quite good, if a little hectic. I thought I’d share about it. I am linking up with Hello Monday.

On Saturday, I had a temp worker who was here for the first time as my one-on-one staff for most of the morning shift. Thankfully, I got along with him okay. This did mean I didn’t feel comfortable going on a walk, let alone working with clay or other crafty things. I did play a game of Yahtzee with a fellow resident in the morning. My weighted blanket was also finally put in the washing machine. I was a little worried that putting it in the dryer would damage it, but the staff told me he knew what he was doing. Thankfully, once I got back from Lobith on Sunday, I found out it was still intact.

In the afternoon, I got a new temp worker once again, but thankfully my spouse was here almost as soon as the evening shift started, so I didn’t have to deal with the temp worker long. We drove to my spouse’s and my house in Lobith, picking up groceries and Domino’s pizza along the way. I had the hot and spicy pizza with pepperoni, bell peppers, onions and jalapeños.

Because I hadn’t been walking all day on Saturday, I decided to do some dancing in the evening. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have reached my movement goal on my Apple Watch and I didn’t want to cheat by lowering it yet again (and I certainly didn’t want to break my 250-odd day streak).

On Sunday, we visited my in-laws for a bit. My mother-in-law and I went for a 40-minute walk through the village. In the evening, when I once again had a temp worker, but thankfully a somewhat familiar one, I went for two more 40-minute walks. Then, because I could, I danced some more. I finally doubled my movement goal on my Apple Watch for the first time in half a year.

Yesterday evening, I had a bit of an issue with my sister. I invited her to my birthday at the end of June, thinking that if I invited her now she would have plenty of time to make sure she actually could make it on one of the days my spouse and I are available. She got upset, because her and my youngest niece’s birthdays are first (this Saturday and on the 19th, respectively). She tried to ask me whether we would come over for her birthday too, which on the surface seems reasonable. However, being that she has both this weekend and the weekend after that planned pretty full with other family and, besides, we don’t do last-minute planning for trips that are this long (my sister and her family live over two hours away), I decided against it. According to my sister, the way it “works” in our family is everyone knows when our birthdays are and is welcome to come by, so it wasn’t like she should have invited me. Being the people pleaser that I am, I actually almost let her persuade me to allow her to ask her in-laws, whom I barely know, to pick me up when they would be visiting them on the 18th. Thankfully, my spouse intervened and told me that would be really unwise, since what if I have a meltdown either on the trip or when with my sister’s family? Finally, thankfully, it turned out she wasn’t really expecting us, but was just upset that I’d mentioned my birthday this close to hers. I can see her point.

Yesterday, as a side note, was my partner’s and my fifteenth anniversary of being a couple. I really feel pleased that we decided to “call it a relationship”back on May 7, 2008. We’ve overcome quite a few hurdles in those fifteen years, but I’m so happy that we’re stronger than ever together!

Share Your World (May 1, 2023)

Hi everyone. I’m really wanting to continue my blogging streak and, even though I have a lot I could still write about, I don’t feel like writing a long blog post. Instead, I’m joining Share Your World. Here goes.

1. The First of May is a Bee Gees Song.

Do you like the Bee Gees and if so, what is your favourite track?
I had to look up the group on Spotify to know what they produced, but my hunch was I couldn’t stand them. Indeed, they’re the ones behind Stayin’ Alive, More Than a Woman and other equally annoyingly-sung tracks. So no, I’m not a fan.

2. What was the first record (single or album) you bought?
I would like to say an A-Teens (ABBA cover band) album, as that’s what I listened to most, but probably it was the 1999 album Urban Solitude by Anouk.

3. Do you know what was top of the charts the day you were born?
I had to look it up and checked the number one in the top 40 for my birth week in the Netherlands too just to make sure it wasn’t completely different. It was On My Own by Patti Labelle and Michael Mcdonald. It’s another song I cannot stand.

4. Do you and your partner have a “special tune”?
No, not at this point. Our taste in music tends to develop together though: when we first were dating, we were both into Irish folk. Then came Tom Lehrer. Then followed German schlager and truck driving songs. Then punk (or that was before the schlager and trucking songs, I can’t remember). Then more recently country. Now we’re both into pop. I am more into dance too, as I don’t really listen to music just for its lyrics.

Gratitude:
Music has no hidden agenda, it can inspire, soothe and calm.
I agree wholeheartedly, although I must say people can misuse the idea of music. I mean, staff often tell me to “just” put on some music when I’m distressed. It can definitely help and I won’t deny that, but it’s no cure-all.
