Poem: Light and Dark

Light
Feels good
Like the sun
On my skin
On a warm day in May

Dark
Feels bad
Like a rainstorm
Soaking me
In the midst of November

Light
And dark
Seem to contrast
Like one is always negative
And the other always positive

But without last November
May will never come
And so it is
With light
And dark

Feel all the feels
And remember
You’re alive
And so it is…

This poem was written for this week’s dVerse Poetics. The prompt was to use a piece of instrumental music as inspiration for a poem. I have a lot of playlists of instrumental music in my Spotify library, but choosing a piece was harder than I thought. I eventually went with a piece for which both the title and the music spoke to me. This seems to be intended for meditation and relaxation practices.

  1. ❤ ❤ ❤ So simple yet so potent. This is the kind of music I like to go to sleep to when we have a power outage, the sound machine can't play, and I have to rely on my phone and its battery to find dreamland.

  2. I’ve been listening to every piece of music before I read and comment on poems, and your ambient instrumental music has set me up for the day, Astrid. It’s morning here and I’ve just started again. You have certainly encapsulated the nuances of light and dark that I heard in the piece. A warm day in May speaks to me and the rainstorm in November reflects the past week. I love these lines:
    ‘But without last November
    May will never come
    And so it is
    With light
    And dark’.
I agree with Dora about the measured contentment.

  3. I do a yoga / meditation thing most mornings, thank you for introducing me to this piece of music. I have saved the video and will use it I am certain. Love the words that went with it.
