I haven’t been very inspired to create lately. Last Monday, this topic was on my mind when discussing how I’m doing at my current care home. I sometimes try to blame lack of time or familiar staff to help me create as reasons for why I hardly work with polymer clay anymore. This is indeed a factor, but it’s not everything. I’m probably also experiencing a bit of a decline in my creativity and general cognitive state. Then again, if I don’t nurture this creative side of mine, I will only deteriorate further. And, although if I had all the mental and physical energy in the world, I’d really like to be able to be more independent in other areas, creativity is what I really want to work on.
Thankfully, my crafty spirit isn’t completely gone. In fact, I believe that I still can ignite this spark of creativity that is the recognition that I want to create, so that it will become a massive flame of artistic expression.
It wasn’t even for this reason that I decided to create a gnome out of polymer clay yesterday. It’s my spouse’s birthday tomorrow and I’d be visiting my in-laws in celebration of it today. My spouse has a birthday wishlist and had already guessed correctly the gift I’d selected off of it, so I wanted a handmade gift in addition. My spouse has a large collection of gnomes, so it’d be only logical that I’d create one out of polymer clay.
I actually was more creative than I normally am, as usually I follow a YouTube tutorial except with my unicorns. This time though, I created the gnome completely by imagining it. The only thing I don’t like about it, is the fact that I forgot to paint a white dot in its eyes to make them look a little more alive.
This post was written for Stream of Consciousness Saturday, for which the prompt this week is “create”.

that is only a tiny mistake, and, although I can’t see it, I bet it looks amazing and your spouse will really appreciate the thought and love that went into creating it!

Thank you so much! Yes, although I did point out the mistake, my spouse said the gnome was perfect. I did, however, take pride in the fact that I crafted it without consulting a YouTube tutorial.

What a great idea to ideate a gnome!
It also felt very wizardly to me because of the big hat and the beard.
[and you could give the gnome a pupil – like blue or brown or green or even purple and pink].
I did wonder if the gnome’s feet were a slightly lighter blue than the cloak…
And when I put this post in the Link-Up I thought it was SUNDAY.
[I know that Stream of Consciousness is usually a day on the weekend].
Creativity is a great use of mental and physical energy.
Social and emotional energy too.

Thanks for your kind comment. Yep, the feet are indeed a different color blue than the cloak.
Which linky did you put my post into? I’m confused. As for what day it was, I published my post at around 9:30PM Saturday my time (GMT+1) and, since you’re in Australia, that would have been Sunday early morning your time.

The link-up was THE DISABILITY BLOGGER LINKUP WEEKEND
which used to go every week
then it went every fortnight
and then it went roughly every three months [the current one started in August 2023].
For those people who do not know that link-up Ellen Seidman started it around 2009 or 2010.
And the feet are well distinguishable.
Wanted to be sure I was not imagining things.
Those 10 hours would make a difference! [and so often do]
If there were any crafty or creative link-ups [and I am sure there are plenty] they would go in those lists too.

What a cute little gnome! You make such lovely creations with polymer clay. I’m so glad that your crafty spirit has returned. I feel like this sometimes but once I start a project, it doesn’t take long to feel creative again.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend. 🙂

Thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately, my surge of craftiness was short-lived. I hope it returns soon.

Aw thanks. And if you need any encouragement to get started with polymer clay (mind you, it’s addictive!), I want to let you know I didn’t use any fancy supplies for this gnome. Really all you really need is clay and a tile (most hardware stores at least here in the Netherlands will provide you a spare one for free) to bake your piece on.
