Endless streaks of time (or so it seems)
lie ahead of me,
as I turn page after page
in this book called “Me”
Until one day (possibly still far from now)
I will have reached
the page I pray concludes
with a happily ever-after
In six days, I will turn 36. I am hopeful that I am still not halfway through my life yet, but then again I recently learned that the life expectancy for someone born in 1960 was 52. I just Googled the life expectancy for my birth year, 1986, which was 74.8 years. If this is true, I am just under eighteen months shy of midlife. I am not the healthiest either, so to be fully honest, I probably can’t expect to live that long.
I didn’t want this poem to be fully about doom and gloom either, because, as a Christian, I do believe in eternal life for those who are saved. This is why I ended this poem on a positive note.
I am writing this poem for this week’s Twiglet, which is “turning page”, as well as the Go Dog Go Cafe Tuesday Writing Challenge, which is to start a poem with the word “endless”.
That life expectancy seems incredible low. I’d look at a more reliable source. Census or something.

I think life expectancy is predicted at birth, hence why there is a life expectancy for people born in 1986 even though I assume most are still alive. Besides, infant deaths drag down the numbers too.

I find that number really shocking.

Me too. I mean, especially the one for 1960. If it’s correct, the average person born then has been dead for a decade already.

Granted, this is data from US but maybe it’ll cheer you up. https://www.infoplease.com/us/population/life-expectancy-birth-race-and-sex-1930-2010

Thanks for adding your poem to Click & Run. I was born in 1957 and so possibly should be dead by now, lol.

I should definitely be dead and next year will be my biblical three score and ten!

I’m not sure I understand what you mean next year will be for you, but am so happy you’re alive too.

You can probably say you “should” have been dead based on more than just that statistic – I mean, with your advanced cancer journey and all -, but I’m so happy you’re alive!
