What’s your definition of romantic?

Well, this is an interesting question. One could define romantic as a form of attraction, ie. being in love or having a crush on someone. In that sense, I would say I rarely if ever experience it. I mean, I had childhood crushes, but the reason I called these crushes was more because that’s what everyone else called them. You know, when a girl and a boy hang out, they are almost automatically assumed to be in love. And even when I found out I liked girls more, I still said I was “in love” because everyone my age had a boyfriend or girlfriend.

When I met my now best friend, both of us probably had similar thoughts of what sharing our life was supposed to mean. We now realize we weren’t looking for a romantic partner but for a best friend. So that’s what we are. We are technically still married, but we aren’t in love. Honestly, never were.

Then, “romantic” can refer to an expression of thinking someone is special. In this sense, I am quite romantic. I am a sucker for hearts even though they make my best friend feel slightly uncomfortable now that we’ve clarified to each other that we aren’t in love. In this sense, the feeling of having a crush on someone, for me, is quite different from feeling that they’re special. I must admit I’m still figuring these things out though.

Reading Wrap-Up (May 20, 2024) #IMWAYR

Hi everyone. I finally have a few ideas for blog posts. Too bad most are Monday themes and it’s already 10PM. Oh well, I could probably join in late with some of them. First, I’ve really been back in a reading groove over the past week, so I thought I’d share what I’ve been reading and am considering reading next. As usual, I’m linking up with #IMWAYR.

First off, let me share that I started being active on both Goodreads and the Storygraph again. I had abandoned them in early 2023 since I was hardly reading anything. I also still feel that Goodreads really, really badly needs a DNF shelf. I mean, the Storygraph’s interface sucks, so it’s probably not something I’m going to use for my everyday reading tracking, but letting unfinished books sit on my currently-reading shelf for years, also sucks. However, it looks unlikely that the big guys at Amazon are ever going to add any new features to Goodreads. Oh well. Let’s get into my reading wrap-up.

What I’m Currently Reading

I’m reading Little Girl Lost by Casey Watson. So far, it doesn’t look as amazing as her other books.

I’m also reading Security Risk (Pelican Bay Security, #1) by Megan Matthews. I picked it pretty randomly after finishing another book on Kindle. I have had this book forever, since it was at one point free (or maybe still is), probably because it’s the first in the series. I’m only 8% in, but I think I like it.

What I Recently Finished Reading

I finally finished Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden-Mills. Have I ever even mentioned reading it? I don’t think so. Anyway, I looked at my Goodreads and saw that I started reading it in June of last year. It’s a bit dark because of the sexual assault theme, but this was actually the thing that got me pulled into the romance thing too. I wasn’t attracted to the explicit love scenes in particular, but there’s a lot more to this story than smut.

This book got me interested in reading the Megan Matthews book, which also falls within the romance genre, although that one is romantic suspense.

What I Think I’ll Read Next

I have absolutely no idea. I’m a total mood reader and can pick up books that I’ve had lying around for months and not forget the story altogether, as with Dear Ava. Maybe that means I don’t need that DNF shelf after all.

The Wednesday HodgePodge (December 20, 2023)

Hi everyone. Another Wednesday, yay! I’m joining in with the Wednesday HodgePodge. Here goes.

1. Did you do more talking or more listening yesterday? Was it by choice or by necessity?
Talking. Honestly, even though I’m an introvert, I talk more than I listen generally. Maybe that technically makes me an ambivert, who knows?

2. Are you a tea drinker? Hot, cold, or both? Flavored? What do you like in your tea? Do you make Christmas tea this time of year? What time of day do you like to sip your tea?
I’m more of a coffee lover but I do drink tea occasionally. Usually hot. I mostly drink plain green tea, although I like some flavored green teas too, like coconut or cranberry. Nothing in my tea please. I’ve never made Christmas teas and have no idea what makes a tea specifically a Christmas tea. I usually drink my tea in the afternoon or evening.

3. What’s an activity you won’t try, an event you won’t attend, or an athletic challenge you won’t take part in not even for “all the tea in China”?
Marathon running. That is, most likely I will never run more than 100m at all and that can barely be considered running.

4. What’s something most people seem to love but is not “your cup of tea”?
Starbucks. And yes, I thought of that before I’d read Joyce’s answer. Like I said before, I went there twice and thought I sort of liked it the first time (because everyone apparently does). The second time though, both I and my spouse decided we definitely weren’t coming back.

Oh and romance novels. I am not sure whether I haven’t found the right kind yet but I think they’re all horribly cheesy, shallow and predictable, and it’s not like I need lots of twists in a book otherwise.

5. How does your family celebrate New Year’s Eve?
Uhm, we don’t? That is, as far as I know my spouse isn’t expecting me to come to our house for the occasion. Last year, though I did spend New Year’s Eve in Lobith, we went to bed before midnight.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
I want to share some good news: my one-on-one got renewed! I don’t know any details yet, but according to my staff everything will stay the same with respect to my care.

Reading Wrap-Up (January 17, 2022) #IMWAYR

Hi everyone. I’ve done a fair amount of reading once again over the past week. For this reason, I thought I’d do another recap of what I’ve read. As usual, I’m linking up with It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

What I’m Currently Reading

Still reading A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult. Being that the story is told in reverse chronological order, I found out pretty quickly that it was not going to end well (sorry if that’s a spoiler). However, also knowing that the story probably isn’t told in reverse order for no reason, I wanted to know what happened in the 86% after (or should I say “before”?) what I now think of as one of the main characters getting killed. Besides, I knew from the blurb that this book was about a hostage situation. In that kind of a situation, usually, people die. So I try to let my curiosity win the battle from my thought that every one of Picoult’s books has to end with the main character dying, because that’s what happened in My Sister’s Keeper and Handle With Care.

Other than that, I decided to pick up My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga pretty randomly again. I’d started reading that book early last year and pretty much left it unfinished, but I really want to know what happens at the end even though I think the writing style and character development are both meh.

What I Recently Finished Reading

First, of course, I finished Behind Closed Doors by Maggie Hartley. I reviewed it on Wednesday. I also finished Twilight, Say Cheese!, the first book in the Unicorn University chapter book series by Daisy Sunshine. I really liked that one, but haven’t been in the mood for children’s books since then.

What I Think I’ll Read Next

It probably depends on whether I’ll remain in the mood for adult lit or young adult novels or will want to read children’s books again. I mean, I still want to finish The Choices We Make by Karma Brown, another book I started back in early 2021. I also added a few free romance novels to my Apple Books via BookBub. Then again, I’ve never read pure romance and am pretty scared of the smutty, steamy stuff. It quite frankly creeps me out even thinking about it. Then again, I’m 35-years-old, so maybe it’s about time I start to grow up.

Four #SoCS

My husband and I like the number four. The reason is that the Dutch word for four, “vier”, is also the Dutch word for “celebrate”. One day when my then boyfriend and I were walking in a forest near his home, we went up a hill and he proposed we celebrate getting on top of the hill with a kiss. A little later, we saw the number four written on the path or something and he said four means to celebrate with a kiss. This is how we ended up making up the word “fouring” for kissing.

We played a lot of card games back then. This was in 2008, when I was still inpatient on the locked psych ward. We didn’t really know what else to do. So everytime a four came up in our card games, one of us would say that meant we had to kiss.

We got married on the day we knew each other four years exactly. Actually, the wedding ceremony was at 3PM. That had been the time of our first date too. It wasn’t because we selected the time, but it was quite cool anyway.

I like to remind myself of these beautiful moments. My husband gave me this little bride and groom that had been on top of our wedding cake. He dug it up from the attic the day after we had a little argument last week about me thinking I might go into supported housing nearly two hours from him. I liked the reminder. I love my husband! I don’t want to ever leave him. I don’t want to live too far from him. My marriage trumps my need for good care.

It’s Sunday and once again, I am participating in Song Lyric Sunday. Today, the theme is Desire/Lust/Romance/Passion. I am sharing a little song, which I already wanted to share several weeks ago when the theme was Fire or something like it.

In 2008 or 2009, my husband introduced me to Tom Lehrer. The first songs I heard were I Hold Your Hand in Mine and Poisoning Pigeons in the Park. For my 23rd birthday, I however got a CD with lots of songs by Lehrer. One of them is The Masochism Tango, which I am sharing here. I love the upbeat tune and the lyrics, of course.
